In October we started dog sitting with Rover and as part of our service we do a little dog photography session with out clients. These are some of our favorites from 2018!

We decided to dog sit because we would really love to get a 2nd dog, however because we’re still renting and headed off to graduate school next year our life isn’t really ready for it yet. We figured the next best thing was getting to watch other people’s dogs! It’s been so much fun to experience so many different breeds and personalities. Anytime we watch a dog we especially like we talk about our next dog being that breed. Right now we’re leaning towards a Beagle.

Are you wondering if Dog Sitting might be right for you? Here are some of our most frequently asked questions.

When you’re gone, what will you do with my dog?

Because I work from home and Matt is a full time student we are both home a lot! In fact the only time we really leave the house is to go to church or the grocery store and occasionally a date night. This has been great for our rover clients because their #1 reason for choosing a dog sitter instead of boarding their furbaby with a kennel is the human interaction and attention.

My dog is a runner, is your yard completely enclosed?

Having a fenced yard has been one of our #1 selling points for our clients. We don’t mind watching some of the bigger breeds so having enough space for them to really run has been important. On warm nights we almost always end up in the yard throwing balls for the dogs and letting Emi swing. Knowing that their furbaby will get lots of exercise and plenty of time to work out their energy helps many owners feel confident in leaving their dogs with us.

How many other dogs do you watch at the same time?

We have a limit of 2 dogs at a time, so 3 total because we always have our furbaby Rego. Some owners will prefer that theirs is the only dog you watch because they might have a hard time getting along with others or they worry that other dogs will be mean. We prefer to watch dogs who are kennel trained because if anyone has a hard time getting along we can rotate them through their kennels so everyone can play safe. Most of the time everyone gets along though.

Can you handle a puppy?

We get puppies a lot! Owners don’t want to leave their puppies at a kennel because they’re so young and need more love and attention. But they are also a lot more work. Rover has a built in “puppy rate” feature so we can charge more for the extra work that comes with watching a puppy. We tack on even a little bit more for really young puppies that are still potty training.

If you don’t think you’re up for a puppy you can change your settings to say so. In fact you can be as picky as you want with Rover. You can restrict the age and size of the dogs you watch depending on your personal circumstances.

Final thoughts.

If you’re a dog person you would probably love dog sitting with Rover, just make sure your lifestyle can handle it. You don’t have to be a dog photographer to build a successful dog sitting business but think about what else you might be able to do to wow your clients and get killer reviews.
