You know that rare and fleeting moment as a mom when the kids are in bed, the dishes are done, your husband is happy doing his own thing and you actually get a minute to yourself? Do you spend most of that precious moment trying to figure out what the heck you should do with your free time?
It’s like you have to re-figure out who you are and what you like in that 60 minute window and by the time you do… the moment is gone. Or at least most of it.
Believe me, I’ve been there! And I usually end up scrolling on Instagram or watching Fixer Upper reruns because I just don’t have the energy to figure out what I actually want to do.
And that’s where adult coloring comes in.
Have you heard of adult coloring books yet? I have to ask because when I was in my first semester of college I had a sudden and pressing urge to color so I went out and bought myself a Disney Tinkerbell coloring book because I had no idea there were coloring books designed especially for adults!
These wonderful creations are just like kid coloring books but with more intricate designs and they should be your go-to for your me-time because besides being fun, they’re also good for your health!
No seriously! Adult coloring has the same benefits as meditation like reduced stress and anxiety, improved sleep and focus, and improved vision and motor skills as a bonus!
I got my first adult coloring books for Christmas a few years ago and mostly loved them.
I say mostly because there was one big problem! Remember that lack of energy that usually leads me to endless scrolling? Well, that lack of energy also made it hard to choose colors for my coloring projects. And that supposed benefit of reduced stress and anxiety… yeah I wasn’t feeling it! I would get so stressed about choosing the wrong color and ruining the whole picture.

That’s why I was so excited last year when I found Quirkles, a color by number puzzle. Guys these are the best! You have to focus to make sure you color the right sections in the right colors so the image comes alive, but all the decisions have been made for you. Relief for my decision fatigue and so therapeutic!
But sometimes I’d still get frustrated by my limited color options. What if I wanted 3 different shades of blue but my marker pack only came with 2?
A while ago I discovered the Procreate App on my iPad and love using it with my apple pencil. I began to wonder why digital coloring books weren’t a thing because I would have LOVED to use the Procreate App for adult coloring, unlimited and exact color options right at my fingertips!
So, I created one because “create the things you wish existed.” And I’m so excited to share one page of it with you to celebrate National Coloring Book Day (Aug 2). And don’t worry, just in case you don’t have an iPad or Apple Pencil I’ve got an old school printable for you too!
(Also, I think there are Android equivalents to Procreate you could use, but I’m not sure exactly what they are. If you try my mandala digital coloring pages out on an Android I’d love to hear about your experience and results!)
