Sharyti is my best friend so when she found out she was pregnant there was no question, I would be documenting her labor and delivery. I’m going to be honest, this was not my best professional moment. We’d talked about it a lot but the weeks ticked by and we had yet to iron out all the details and sign a contract. We still had plenty of time! or so we all thought. Baby Brogen had other ideas. At 35 weeks he decided to make his debut and because we hadn’t made anything official yet I missed his birth. Luckily I still had plenty of time to get to the hospital for a Fresh 48 session and was still able to tell the greater part of his birth story, but it didn’t have to be that way.
I know that when you’re getting ready to welcome a baby into your family there are a million and one things on your to do list and sometimes its hard to know when the best time to figure everything out is. How early is too early to schedule your baby shower? How late is too late to put the finishing touches on the nursery? Take it from a girl who wanted everything checked off my list at least 2 months before my due date, I get it! So let me bring some clarity to at least one item on your list.
When to book your birth photographer?
First of all, its never too early to book your birth photographer, though I’d probably wait until after your first doctors appointment. You never know when your favorite photographers calendar will fill up so you can’t be too proactive. If you are interested in payment plan, which many birth photographers offer, the earlier you book, the more time you have to make payments since most photographers will require the balance to be paid in full a couple of weeks before your due date.
Personally, I recommend booking during your 2nd trimester. This ensures you have enough time to meet your photographer, make sure you click, and find a different photographer if you don’t, go over all the details that are most important to you, pay the deposit, and sign the contract. It also ensures your not rushed into a decision and can consider adding other services to your package like a maternity or newborn session.
But don’t worry! If you’re already well into your third trimester there is still hope! In reality its never too late to book until you’re in labor – yeah, you probably don’t want to be making that phone call between contractions.
