What to do when family pictures turn cold and windy

I can honestly say that having a session just does not work because of the weather almost never happens. In fact, in the 10+ years I’ve been doing this… This session is the ONLY one where the weather was so cold and windy that we had to scrap the session.

And yet, just look at these images that we were able to capture during this cold and windy family pictures session despite the weather! So here are some tips and tricks for what to do when the weather just won’t cooperate for family pictures.

1. Find something to block the wind

If the wind is the primary problem the simple solution is to try and find something to block the wind. This could be a building like we did in this session, a hill, or even a cospe of trees. Anything you can do to cut the wind is going to help you warm up a little and you might even get a few smiles.

2. Layers, Layers, Layers! And Blankets

Layers already look great in pictures so if you know it’s going to be cold LAYER IT ON! Chunky sweaters, jackets, and even blankets are a great way to stay cozy warm during your session, and as a bonus they make your pictures look cozy warm too!

3. Keep it short

If you have a good photographer they know how to move fast when time is short. While it’s nice to have a full hour to play and get a variety of images, its possible to get the essentials in just 15 or 20 minutes. If your family pictures are looking cold and windy, don’t be afraid to adjust your timeline. I always say it’s better not to torture the kids (or husband) so they’re more willing to participate next time. If they’ve reached their limit, call it and either try again later or trust your photographer to get what they need in the limited time.

4. Embrace it for what it is

If it’s cold and windy, embrace it for what it is! Dress appropriately and don’t expect your kids to run and play or even smile like they usually would. Embrace the cuddles, hold them tight and wrap them up. Pictures like these are full of their own sweet tenderness, it may not be what you had in mind, but it’s real. I promise you’ll always cherish that picture of their arms wrapped around you nuzzled into your chest. Whenever you look at it you’ll be able to feel their little arms around you.

While I’ll usually reschedule your family picture session if things are looking too cold or windy, sometimes it can sneak up on you or you don’t have the luxury. In that case planning ahead and adjusting your expectation can still make your cold and windy family pictures a success.
